NOMAS
Student Competition
NOMAS, or the National Organization for Minority Architecture Students, acts as an outlet for students to speak on diversity related issues. It also provides an opportunity to understand how the profession can address such issues in real life and design to avoid inequities.
In this competition project, located in Houston, TX, students were given a large site and asked to design a school. However, given the depth of the project, our group believed it important to use the site to it’s full potential. We instead created a masterplan, to be implemented in phases, that would create a vibrant and inclusive community. While the school is present, in the lower right corner, it is paired with social spaces of equal prominence, centering the values of this site on education and community. From this, defining datum lines were drawn to other educational landmarks in the greater area, encouraging growth beyond the site.
I helped with most of the planning and designed the school building. I was also one of the two group members who presented this project to the jurors in Houston.
Race to zero
Student Competition
Race To Zero is a national competition to design a net-zero building, annually hosted by the Department of Energy and the National Research Energy Laboratory (NREL). For our project, we used a site in Kansas City, and focused on these goals:
Net-Zero energy usage, Longevity of building materials, Community empowerment, ADA accessibility, Affordability
In the final report, our team submitted plans for architectural, plumbing, lighting, and ventilation design. We also completed brief construction documents and ran a full energy and cost analysis. Although we did not reach net-zero, we reduced utility bills from $2,200 to $425/year.
I helped with passive design, bioclimactic analysis, and preliminary energy analysis. I also completed the final interior renderings.
Our team was comprised of 14 members from four majors:
Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Construction Science and Management, Biological Systems Engineering
Throughout the project we continuously met with the local neighborhood association and various industry partners as we designed and were as a finalists by NREL, to present to a panel of jurors in Golden, Colorado. Myself and six other team members spoke in the final competition, though we did not place in the end.
